Kettlebell vs dumbbell

No study has ever compared them. Everyone answering sells both.

Search this question and you get six confident answers. Kettlebells for power, dumbbells for muscle, get both if you can. Every one of those pages is written by a company that sells kettlebells and dumbbells. And not one of them mentions that the study they are describing has never been done.

The comparison you are looking for does not exist

There is no published trial that put one group on kettlebells, another on dumbbells, ran them for a few months and measured who gained more. It has not been done.

What has been done is narrower. Kettlebells have been compared to jump squats. Kettlebells have been compared to weightlifting. Kettlebell training has been tested to see what it carries over to. And the loads inside a swing have been modeled in a lab. That is the evidence base, and it is four studies, three of which have fewer than 40 people in them.

So when a page tells you dumbbells are better for building muscle and kettlebells are better for power, it is not reporting a result. It is reasoning from the shape of the objects, which is a fair thing to do, but it is not the same as knowing.

What a kettlebell on its own actually did

In 2012 Jason Lake and Mike Lauder took 21 healthy men and had them train twice a week for six weeks. One group did nothing but kettlebell swings, in twelve-minute bouts, using a 12 kg bell if they weighed under 70 kg and a 16 kg bell if they weighed more. The other group did jump squats, which is a known way to build power.

The swing group's half squat one-rep max rose 9.8%. Their vertical jump rose 19.8%. Neither result was significantly different from the jump squat group.

That matters because it cuts against the received split. A light bell, swung, improved maximum strength. Kettlebells are supposed to be the conditioning tool.

And what happened against a barbell

The same year, William Otto's group ran kettlebell training against weightlifting. Thirty men, six weeks, twice a week. Swings, accelerated swings and goblet squats on one side, high pulls, power cleans and back squats on the other.

Both groups got stronger. The weightlifting group got significantly stronger than the kettlebell group. Vertical jump showed no difference between them, and neither group changed body composition at all.

Put the two studies together and you get the honest position. A kettlebell beats doing nothing and holds its own against another light, explosive method. It loses to a loaded barbell when maximum strength is the goal, which is unsurprising, because you can put far more weight on a barbell.

What kettlebell training carries over to

Pasquale Manocchia's group trained 37 people on kettlebells for ten weeks and then tested them on barbell lifts. Bench press improved significantly. Clean and jerk came close without quite getting there. Back extensions to fatigue trended the same way.

Maximal vertical jump did not move at all, which is awkward, because the swing study found a 19.8% jump improvement. Two studies, opposite results on the same measure. Nobody reporting this picks a side, and neither does this page: it is a small evidence base and it disagrees with itself.

One thing to hold in mind reading that study: its participants ranged from 18 to 72 years old, which is a very wide spread for 37 people.

What a swing does that a press does not

Stuart McGill and Leigh Marshall put kettlebell swings through a biomechanical model in 2012. With a 16 kg bell, a swing produced roughly 50% of maximum activation in the low back extensors, 80% in the glutes, and about 3,200 newtons of compression through the low back.

The interesting finding is directional. The swing sheared the L4 vertebra backwards on L5. That is the opposite direction to what a normal lift produces. It is the clearest mechanical statement anywhere that a swing is not just a lighter deadlift, and almost nobody writing about kettlebells quotes it.

What it does not tell you is whether that is good or bad for you. The authors were careful and this page will be too. They wrote that their work offers insight into why many people credit swings with restoring back health, while a few find that swings irritate tissues. Both halves, in one sentence. Seven people were measured.

The difference that is actually real

Forget which builds more muscle, because nobody knows. The checkable difference is geometry.

A dumbbell's weight sits in your hand, level with your grip. That makes it predictable in almost any position, which is why it works for pressing, curling, raising and rowing equally well.

A kettlebell's weight hangs below and behind the handle. That makes it awkward to press in a straight line and excellent to swing, because the offset load wants to travel in an arc. It is a tool built around one pattern, the hip hinge, and it does that pattern better than a dumbbell does.

Which one to buy

This site sells neither, which is why it can give you the answer the retailer pages will not: you probably need one, not both.

Buy the kettlebell if the swing is what you want. It is the one thing on this list a dumbbell genuinely does worse, and the research showing a light bell building real strength is all swing research.

How thin this evidence is

Four studies. Three of them have fewer than 40 participants, and one has seven. All four are men only or mostly men. By the standards of the rest of the research on this site, this is a thin base, and the fair conclusion is that kettlebells work rather than that they beat anything.

Common questions

Is a kettlebell better than a dumbbell?
Nobody has measured it. There is no published study that trained one group on kettlebells and another on dumbbells and compared them. Every confident answer you have read is an extrapolation from research that compared kettlebells to something else entirely, usually a barbell or a jump squat.
Which builds more muscle, kettlebells or dumbbells?
Unknown, and be suspicious of anyone who tells you otherwise. The one study that measured body composition in kettlebell training found no change in either group over six weeks, and it was comparing kettlebells to weightlifting rather than to dumbbells.
Can you build strength with just kettlebell swings?
Yes, and this surprises people. Twenty-one men trained nothing but swings twice a week for six weeks with a 12 or 16 kg bell. Their half squat one-rep max rose about 10% and their vertical jump about 20%, which matched a group doing jump squats instead.
Are kettlebells better for conditioning and dumbbells better for muscle?
That is the standard answer and the research does not support the first half cleanly. Swings alone improved maximum strength, not just conditioning. The honest split is about shape rather than outcome: a kettlebell suits swinging and a dumbbell suits a wider range of positions.
Should I buy kettlebells or dumbbells first?

Are kettlebell swings bad for your back?
The loads have been measured, the verdict has not. A 16 kg swing produced roughly 3,200 newtons of low back compression and, unusually, sheared the L4 vertebra backwards on L5, which is the opposite direction to a normal lift. The researchers noted that many people credit swings with improving their backs and a few find they irritate them.
Do kettlebells transfer to barbell lifts?
Partly. After ten weeks of kettlebell training, bench press improved significantly. Clean and jerk came close without reaching significance. Vertical jump did not move at all, which sits awkwardly next to the swing study that found a 20% jump improvement.
Do I need both kettlebells and dumbbells?
Almost certainly not, and notice that every page telling you the answer depends on your goals is selling both. The two overlap heavily. Pick the one that matches the exercises you actually want to do and buy the second only when you find yourself blocked.
