Kettlebell goblet squat
Also called Goblet squat, Kettlebell goblet squat, KB goblet squat.
You hold a kettlebell by the horns against your sternum and squat down between your feet, and the bell stays on your chest from the first repetition to the last. The quadriceps do the work, your glutes take a larger share the deeper you go, and your trunk holds the torso upright against a weight hanging off the front of it. What the load changes is not the shape of the squat. It is how much of you has to work to keep that shape, and which things start going wrong when it slips.
How to do it
- Step oneStand with your feet slightly wider than shoulder-width apart and toes turned out slightly.
- Step twoHold a kettlebell by the horns with both hands, cupped from underneath, so the ball of the bell rests against your sternum and your wrists stay in line with your forearms.
- Step threeWith your elbows pointing down, lower into the squat, letting your elbows travel inside your knees.
- Step fourDescend until your thighs are at or below parallel to the floor, keeping your chest upright, the bell in contact with your chest, and your knees tracking over your toes.
- Step fiveDrive through your heels to return to the starting position, and set the bell down between your feet by hinging at the hips when the set is finished.
What usually goes wrong
The handle digs into the backs of your wrists and they ache before your legs do.
WhyThe bell is being carried by the top of the handle, so the ball hangs out in front of your hands and your wrists bend backward to keep it off you. A kettlebell puts its mass in the ball rather than in line with your grip, and held that way the ball is a weight on a lever with your wrist at the pivot.
FixTake the two horns instead, cupped from underneath, so the ball sits back against your sternum and your wrists stay in line with your forearms. The handle should end up under your chin with nothing pressing across the back of either wrist.
You finish the set and realize you have no plan for putting the bell down.
WhyA weight held at chest height has to go back to the floor, and this is the point in the set where you are least able to make that decision well. Dropped equipment is not a small category: across ten years of emergency department records for resistance training it accounted for 18.5 percent of presentations among women and 12.1 percent among men.
FixDecide the descent before you pick it up. Hinge at the hips and set the bell between your feet with both hands still on the horns, and stop the set one repetition before the one where you would rather let go than lower it. Those records cover machines, barbells, dumbbells and kettlebells together and do not separate them, so this is a mechanism worth respecting rather than a figure about this exercise.
The first sets with a real bell are felt up your back rather than in your legs.
WhyEverything between the bell and your hips has to hold it up, and trunk demand in a squat scales with how much external load there is instead of staying where it was when your hands were empty. Nobody has published spinal load figures for a goblet squat, so the direction is what we can say and the size is not.
FixEnd the set at the repetition where your torso starts to fold rather than the one where your legs stop. If the back is what finishes every set, the bell has arrived ahead of the position, and the position is the thing that has to come first.
You keep adjusting your stance looking for more from the set and nothing changes.
WhyA review of eighteen studies of the loaded squat found that activation of the prime movers rose as external load rose, and that the adjustments people reach for first, stance width, hip rotation and moving the weight to the front, did not significantly change it.
FixOnce your knees track where your feet point and your heels stay down, leave the stance alone. The variable that answers is the one in your hands, and it is deliberately the last one to change, because everything else has to be settled before adding to it means anything.
Kettlebell or dumbbell in the goblet position
The difference is entirely in how the implement sits in your hands. A dumbbell held on end stacks its mass along the line of your grip, standing up in front of your chest. A kettlebell held by the horns keeps its mass in the ball, which hangs below and behind the handle and settles against your sternum and ribs.
What the bell buys is a load sitting lower and closer to you, and a handle you can take with straight wrists. What it costs is a ball free to rotate away if you grip the horns from the outside rather than from underneath. Neither of those has been tested. There is no study comparing this against the dumbbell version on grip, wrist angle or where the load actually ends up, so treat it as geometry you can check on yourself rather than a finding.
Use whichever one lets you keep your wrists straight and your elbows pointing down. Below the elbows it is the same squat either way.
Why this page says there is a kettlebell
This exercise's own record disagrees with itself. Its implement field says kettlebell. Its summary calls the movement a bodyweight exercise and its second step tells you to hold your hands as though gripping an imaginary weight at your sternum. Only one of those can be describing the demonstration, and the demonstration settles it: there is a bell, it is held by the horns, and it never leaves the chest.
That is worth more than a tidy-up, because an empty-handed squat and a loaded one are not the same exercise to write about. With nothing in your hands there is no grip to fail, no trunk demand worth naming and nothing to put down afterward. Every fault on this page exists only once something is being held, which is why the record being wrong about the load made the rest of it wrong too.
If what you came for was the unloaded rehearsal, doing it first is a reasonable way to start and it costs nothing. It is simply not the movement in this clip.

- One you can still set back down deliberately after the last repetition. Kettlebells come in fixed jumps and the next size up is often a long step, so when the gap is too wide the honest answers are more depth or a slower descent rather than the bigger bell.
- Should I learn this without a weight first?
- It is a sensible order and it costs nothing to do. What an empty-handed squat cannot show you is everything above the waist: how the bell sits, what your wrists do, how the torso holds up under a front load, and how the thing gets back to the floor. All of that arrives with the weight.
- How deep should you squat with a kettlebell at your chest?
- As deep as you can go with the heels down and the bell still touching you. Where that is depends on your hips and ankles and it is not the same number for two people. Depth you can only reach by letting the bell come away from your chest is depth the position has not got yet.
