Dumbbell plank drag

Also called Plank pull-through, Plank drag through, Underbody drag, Dumbbell drag through, Plank dumbbell pull-through.

The short answer

The plank drag holds you in a push-up position with a dumbbell on the floor beside one hand, then reaches the opposite hand under your chest and pulls the weight across to the other side. The obliques down the sides of your trunk are what this exercise is built around: a load traveling out to one side tries to turn your hips, and refusing to turn is the work. Your abs are still holding you flat the way they do in any plank, and the arm left on the floor is carrying your upper body on its own. It also goes by plank pull-through and underbody drag.

How to do it

  1. Step oneStart in a high plank position with a dumbbell on the ground just outside one hand.
  2. Step twoReach the opposite hand under your torso and drag the dumbbell to the other side.
  3. Step threeReturn to the plank position and repeat with the other hand dragging the dumbbell back.
  4. Step fourMaintain a rigid, level plank throughout the movement and avoid swaying your hips.

What usually goes wrong

Each starts with what you would notice.

Your hips swing toward the side you are reaching for, and one hip finishes higher than the other.

WhyThe moment a hand leaves the floor you are supported at three points instead of four, and the dumbbell is pulling out to one side of that triangle. The turn is the load. Letting it happen is the exercise not happening.

FixSet your feet wider than your shoulders before the first rep, so there is more base to resist the turn, and move the weight slowly enough that you can feel both hips staying level. Film one set from behind if you cannot tell.

The dumbbell needs a yank to get going and it arrives with a jolt.

WhyIt weighs more than this position can control. Dragging along the floor means overcoming friction as well as the weight itself, so what you can move steadily from here is far less than what you could row or press.

The shoulder holding you up shakes, and that is what ends the set rather than anything in your middle.

WhyOne arm is holding what two shared a second ago, and it is being pulled sideways by the drag at the same time. That side is under more than it looks.

FixKeep the supporting hand directly under its shoulder rather than out in front, and keep the sets short. If that shoulder is always the limit, do the drag from your knees until it is not.

WhyA round-headed dumbbell rolls, and it rolls fastest at the exact moment you have one hand off the floor.

FixUse a hexagonal dumbbell if there is one. If everything in the room is round, drag it by the handle and expect to reset it more often than you would like.

Plank drag or a plank hold

A plain plank asks your trunk to hold one line while nothing pulls on it. The drag adds something that pulls, and it pulls sideways.

That is a different direction of demand rather than a harder version of the same one. Where planks have been made one-sided in a lab, by loading or moving a single limb, oblique activity rises against the ordinary symmetrical hold. In the one study that put the two side by side, a plank held while a single leg pressed inward produced more external oblique activity than the same plank with both legs pressing, and both beat the plain hold.

So both are worth having, for different reasons. The plank trains holding a line. The drag trains holding a line while something argues with it.

Plank drag or renegade row

They look alike and they ask for different things. In a renegade row the dumbbell leaves the floor and comes up to your ribs, which stacks a back exercise on top of the plank.

In the drag the weight never leaves the floor. Nothing is lifted, so the exercise stays about your trunk, and the load stays low enough that your trunk is what runs out first.

If you want a row, row. If you want to find out whether you can stay square while a weight tries to turn you, the drag is the cleaner test of it, and the easier of the two to run with light dumbbells at home.

What has actually been measured

Almost every page written about this exercise talks about activation, usually with a verb like fires or torches attached to it. Here is the state of the evidence: nobody has put electrodes on anyone doing a plank dumbbell drag. Not on this, not on the renegade row, not on the pull-through under any of its names.

What has been measured is the family it belongs to. Planks made one-sided or unstable produce more oblique activity than the plain symmetrical version, and in the plank studies that recorded both, the external oblique often reads higher than the rectus abdominis. Those findings come from other exercises that create the same problem this one creates.

That is enough to say what the drag is for and how to judge whether a rep was any good, which is what this page does. It is not enough to give you a percentage, so there is not one here.

The plank dumbbell drag is a core stability exercise that challenges the abs and obliques to resist rotation while pulling a dumbbell from side to side. It develops anti-rotation strength, shoulder stability, and full core engagement.

Questions people ask

What muscles does the plank drag work?
The obliques do the work of stopping the load turning you. Your abs hold the plank position itself, the shoulder and chest of the supporting arm carry your upper body, and the arm doing the dragging pulls with its chest and the front of its shoulder.
Is the plank drag really an anti-rotation exercise?
Mechanically, yes. The weight travels out to one side of your base and you refuse to follow it. What is worth knowing is that the evidence for this comes from planks made one-sided in general, not from this drill, which has never been measured.
How heavy a dumbbell can you drag?
Light enough to slide across in one steady pull with your hips level. That is usually much lighter than people expect, because friction is added to the weight, and because a load out to one side of a narrow base is harder to hold than the same load sitting in the middle.
Why do my hips twist when I reach under?
Taking a hand off leaves you on three points of support with a weight pulling to one side of them. Wider feet give you more to resist with, and a lighter dumbbell gives you less to resist. Both beat trying harder.
Plank drag or renegade row?
The row lifts the weight, which adds a pulling exercise to the plank. The drag never lifts it, so it stays a trunk exercise with a lighter load. Neither has been compared with the other in any study.
Can I do it from my knees?
Yes, and it is the sensible way in if the supporting shoulder is what gives out first. Knees down shortens the body, so there is less of you to hold up and less turning force to refuse, and the drag itself is unchanged.
