Dumbbell single leg box squat press
Also called Single-leg box squat to press, Single-leg sit-to-stand with overhead press, One-leg box squat press, Single-leg bench squat press.
The demonstration works between a box and the floor. You sit on the box with one foot planted and the other leg held clear, stand all the way up on that single leg, and press a dumbbell overhead with the opposite hand as you rise. The quadriceps of the standing leg get you off the seat and its gluteus maximus finishes the hip, while the deltoid and triceps take the dumbbell up. The box is the part the catalog record was written without: it fixes how far you travel and it carries you between reps, which is what stops the depth quietly shrinking as the set goes on.
How to do it
- Step oneSit on a box with your feet flat on the floor, holding a dumbbell at shoulder height in the hand opposite the leg you will stand on.
- Step twoLift the other foot clear of the floor and hold that knee bent, so only one foot is loaded.
- Step threeStand up on the planted leg, keeping your pelvis level, and press the dumbbell overhead as you rise until your arm is fully extended.
- Step fourLower the dumbbell back to shoulder height and lower yourself under control until you are sitting on the box again, keeping the free foot off the floor throughout.
- Step fiveComplete all repetitions on one side before switching legs and hands.
What usually goes wrong
The free foot finds the floor on the way out of the seat.
WhyThe hovering leg stays hovering only while the standing one has something left. The moment it does not, the free foot touches down and two legs finish a repetition that one leg started, which is the point where this stops being a single-leg exercise at all.
FixRaise the seat until you can leave it with the free foot still in the air, and treat the height you can honestly clear as the height you work at. Nothing is lost by starting from a taller box.
You land on the box and the next repetition starts out of the bounce.
WhyDropping the last few inches loads the seat instead of the leg, and the rebound off a solid surface does part of the standing up for you. The box was there to be a floor you cannot travel past, not something to push off.
FixCome down under control, settle on the seat for a beat with the free foot still up, then stand. If the repetition only happens when you arrive hard, the box is lower than the leg can currently manage.
The hip you are standing on gives way sideways and the other side of your pelvis drops.
WhyYou are over one foot with the weight in the hand on the far side, and that arrangement is the one that asks most of the abductors at the standing hip. It has been measured during walking, at loads of 10 and 20 percent of body weight, and carrying on the opposite side produced the highest gluteus medius activity of the positions tested. Nobody has run that measurement on a box squat, so read it as the direction the effect runs.
FixSet the pelvis level before you leave the seat and hold that line the whole way up, then all the way back down. If it will not hold, work the same movement without the dumbbell until it does, because the hip is the thing setting the height of everything else here.
You moved to a lower box expecting it to be harder and it was not.
WhyBelow a certain seat height it stops getting harder. People stood up from six seat heights between 10 and 60 cm (4 and 24 in), and the peak combined hip and knee moment rose as the seat came down from 60 to 40 cm and then did not change at all from 40 cm down to 10 cm. The peak always lands at or near the position where the thigh is horizontal, so once the seat sits below that, going lower adds travel and not demand.
FixChoose the seat height by whether you can stand up from it cleanly on one leg, not by how low it looks. That study used eight people, two legs and no weight, so it tells you the shape of the relationship rather than a number for this version.
The box is a seat, not a platform
Your foot never touches the top of it. You begin sitting on the box and finish standing on the floor beside it, and the box spends the whole set underneath you rather than in front of you.
A step-up is built the other way round. The working foot goes onto the platform first and the rest of you climbs to meet it, so the platform decides the height you have to reach. Here it decides the height you start from, and a taller one makes the movement easier rather than harder.
The reason to keep them apart is that they fail differently. A step-up gets rescued by the trailing foot still on the floor. This gets rescued by the seat, either by dropping onto it or by pushing off it, and both of those look like a completed repetition from the outside.
What standing up on one leg is actually good at
This shape has a second life outside the gym as a measurement. Timed one-leg sit-to-stand performance was checked in 40 young adults and repeated almost exactly, an intraclass correlation of 0.960 between two sessions, and the times correlated with concentric peak strength across every lower-limb muscle group put on the dynamometer. Force-plate versions of the same test have since been reported as reliable in trained adults.
Read that for what it says. The movement is a repeatable way of asking one leg a question and getting the same answer twice. It is not a claim that the movement builds that leg better than exercises whose weight you can keep raising, and none of those studies looked at training with it.
So the honest use is a check and a piece of practice. If one side takes visibly longer to leave the seat than the other, that is worth knowing, and it is precisely the thing a two-legged squat covers up.

- Is this a step-up?
- No. Your foot never goes on the box, so nothing here is a climb. You sit on it and stand up off it, which makes it a seat. The exercise where the foot goes up onto the platform is the step-up, and it has its own entry.
- How high should the box be?
- High enough that you can leave it on one leg without the free foot touching down, and no higher than it needs to be once you can. In a two-legged sit-to-stand the peak hip and knee moment stopped rising once the seat dropped below about 40 cm (16 in), so a very low box mostly buys travel, and it is also the height at which the free foot starts helping.
- How heavy should the dumbbell be?
- Light enough to hold overhead while standing on one foot. The two halves of the repetition have different ceilings, and the arm sets the lower one by a wide margin, so the weight you end up with is decided by the press and not by the leg. If a number matters to you that day, the leg and the press are better trained separately.
- Should the dumbbell be in the hand opposite the standing leg?
- That is what the demonstration does, and it is the arrangement that asks most of the standing hip. - Do I have to sit all the way down on the box?
- Touching it is what keeps every repetition the same size as the last one. Hovering above the seat turns depth back into something judged by feel, which is the exact problem the box was solving. Arrive, settle, stand.

- Because coordinating a one-legged stand with a one-armed press is difficult to do tidily, not because the dumbbell is heavy. Those are separate things, and the rating is about the first one. A movement can be hard to perform and still be a light exercise.
